What many refer to as "TMJ" when discussing a problem they are having with their jaw joint(s) is acutally termed "TMD," which stands for Temporomandibular Dysfunction. At Accent Dentistry, we actually TREAT the PROBLEM, not just the symptoms. Far too often patients are just given a "nightguard" whenever a joint problem exists. Treatment of the PROBLEM prevents further destruction of the jaw joint (the TMJ or temporo-mandibular joint) components. Treating only the SYMPTOMS without correcting the problem does not help the TMJ. We are committed to treating both simultaneously. Don't be fooled, the problem will not correct itself and the symptoms will prevail. Far too often patients who present to our office have had many medical "tests" for multiple symptoms of the head, neck and back only to be frustrated by the lack of resolution of their symptoms. Often these symptoms are due to dysfunction of the TMJ (jaw joints)which can readily be treated non-surgically in the majority of cases. It is unfortunate, but many of the patients treated in our office had been told that "surgery" was their only option for treating their TMJ problem. Once TREATED at our office, they were grateful that their "pain" and "symptoms" disappeared without surgery.
